What is Pin code? When PIN (Postal Index Number) Code system was established?

What is Pin code? When PIN (Postal Index Number) Code system was established?
The PIN (Postal Index Number) Code system was established in 15th of August, 1972. It was established to remove confusion caused by:
• Incorrect addresses
• Places having similar names
• Addresses written in different languages
Each PIN code is a six digit number, where each digit serves a different function. The first digit indicates the region. India is divided into eight regions and one functional zone (Indian Army). The second digit indicates the sub-region. The third digit indicates the sorting district. The first three digits combined together point to a particular geographic region which is called a sorting district. Each sorting district has a headquarter in the largest city of that district.

pincodeofindia.in

The fourth digit indicates the area in the sorting district where the address’ post office is located and the last two digits indicate the address’ post office.
When we post a letter. It is first sent to its corresponding sorting district headquarter indicated by the first three digits of the PIN code where it is sorted and sent to its corresponding local post office. At the local post office, the letter is sorted to its corresponding area and handed over to the postman in charge of that area. The post man then hand delivers the letter to the address.
